About Bales Ash Campsite

Bales Ash Campsite sits above the Taw Valley in beautiful North Devon countryside with views across to Exmoor.

It provides a complete escape from the pace of modern life. This North Devon campsite offers relaxed glamping in two beautiful spacious fields covering 10 acres so there is plenty of room for everyone and still masses of space to play.

Sit and chat around a fire pit or just enjoy gazing at the stars in the endless Devon sky and marvel at the complete and utter stillness of being away from it all. Bales Ash is a wonderful place to chill out and get back in touch with the other side of you. 2 pubs and a great community shop in the village one mile away.

We are not a commercial site with lots of fancy facilities - however we do have just what you need! We provide lovely treated drinking water from our own borehole.

There are 3 hygienic and modern compostable toilets, 3 fabulous indoor hot water showers together, 3 modern basins for teeth cleaning and outdoor Belfast sinks for washing up etc.

There is a freezer for cold packs and bags of ice for sale for your gin and tonic. Each glamping unit has its own private kitchen which is fully equipped.

Campfires are allowed in our own off the ground firepits and BBQs are provided. We can sell you logs and kindling at competitive prices.

We have a small campsite shop with the basics: milk, local farm eggs, baked beans, pasta, ice, marshmallows, chocolate...Cream Teas and home made cakes are available.

A particular speciality is catering for gluten free diets and with a vegan in the family we can even do that too! Just talk to us.

We can arrange to pick you up from Umberleigh or Portsmouth Arms train stations on the scenic Tarka trainline and Ann will even collect you from the village pub if she's available.

We sell cake and cream teas to order, no problem to cater for gluten free vegan or other allergies. We also sell chocolate, ice cream and crisps. The community shop nearby has a wider range of goods, though run by volunteers, there is a good range of local produce and other basics. Free Wifi is available in some units and on the large field. There are goal posts for football and a den making area in the large field. Our bunnies, Humphrey and Hattie are also a popular attraction.

Most people who visit the site comment on how nice it is to have an open fire. We sell everything you need for this and will also help you light it if needed. The glamping units all have fully equipped kitchens in mini marquees to give suitable protection from any poor weather. The washing machine is in the shower area which can be used for a small charge. The hot showers are powerful and free. You can wash up in the shared area or use the bowl etc that is provided in you glamping unit.

We pride ourselves on well maintained spotlessly clean compost loos. Our borehole provides fantastic drinking water. and extremely good pressure. Mixed recycling is collected each week by a company with a 0 landfill policy. It is sorted at their plant using sophisticated separators.

Linen and towels can be hired or you can bring your own. We provide duvets, pillows and beds. The grass is often wet first thing in the morning so waterproof shoes or boots are highly recommended. We provide hot water bottles but extra blankets can be useful on chillier nights.

There is a huge range of attractions in easy reach, mostly located either near the main beaches of suntan and Croyde, in or around the towns of Barnstaple and South Molton, or on the neighbouring rivers and moors. We provide a large rack of leaflets to assist you in choosing. There are two pubs in the village which are a short walk across about 4 fields and the landlord is always happy to drop you back to the site if required. Many local pubs serve food and they are all dog-friendly.

Notes about prices

Glamping units start from £60 a night for up to two people. We charge £10 a night for any additional person up to a maximum of 4. In peak season the base cost is £65 for two people per night.
